Edgar C. Schenck Records, 1950-1955.

The development and expansion of the Albright Art Gallery during Edgar Schenck's tenure included the addition of the first curators to the staff, beginning with Patrick J. Kelleher's appointment in 1950. Kelleher was succeeded by Carroll Hogan in 1954. The administrative correspondence of these curators is included in this series. Other additions to the staff included the successive appointments of Peggy Elfvin and Virginia Flynn as publicity secretaries. Beatrice Howe, assistant director, continued to handle the routine correspondence of the Gallery. Gordon M. Smith, who succeeded Schenck, assumed office in September of 1955, and therefore his correspondence during the latter part of 1955 is included here also. Correspondence falls into three main categories. First, correspondence with other museum administrations documents a large number of loans of art from the Gallery's permanent collection for inclusion in exhibitions. Other correspondence with museums concerns administrative policies, including surveys of institutional practices in American museums; these records document decision-making. The third category is that of art dealers, usually offering art works for consideration for purchase, but sometimes also documenting loans to exhibitions at the Albright and at private dealer galleries. Artists' letters of note included a number from sculptor Jacques Lipchitz who lectured at the Gallery, and also sculptor David Smith. Significant letters from dealers include many from Martha Jackson, who founded her important New York gallery in the late 1940's. Board correspondence includes draft copies of meeting minutes, as well as reports of the various committees, the art director, and curator of education, Roger Squires. Annual lecture series and concert program folders yielded many letters from nationally-recognized scholars, artists, and concert musicians.
